Emergency Food and Essentials

Cary Cares offers a free emergency food and essentials service to people in crisis in Castle Cary, Ansford and the surrounding area. A simple parcel of food and essentials can make a big difference. We don’t think that anyone in our community should have to face going hungry and so we provide nutritionally balanced emergency food and essentials to support local people.

Who is eligible to receive emergency support?

Our Emergency service is available to anyone in distress. This means that we do not discriminate against anyone, especially on the grounds of sex, marital or parental status, race, ethnic or national origin, colour, disability, sexual orientation, religion, or age.

For people in crisis we accept both self-referrals and referrals from third parties such as health visitors, teachers, church representatives, Citizen’s Advice etc.

How do I get an emergency food and essentials package?

If you are in need, or know of someone in need simply contact us. Either fill out our contact form, or leave a message on our answer phone and one of our volunteers will get back to you, usually within 24 hours, to provide immediate support.

What will I get?

As a minimum, we usually supply sufficient food to last you (and your family, where appropriate) 4 days. Depending upon your circumstances further essentials and financial support may be available.

What about if my need is likely to be more long term?

We know that, for example, the winter months can be very difficult for individuals and families who are already managing on extremely tight budgets. Increased winter fuel costs, an unexpected illness or a delay in receiving benefits can be enough to push people into food poverty. For any local residents in this situation, we encourage you to use our Community Food Bank and Larder based at the Millbrook Hub which provides free food and essentials and is there to help you through difficult times.
